LAWRENCE JACOBSON

CONSULTANT BARRISTER

Lawrence has had over 30 years of experience at the Bar and more recently working as an in-house barrister, which has been enhanced by appointments as Chairman and Panel Member of Regulatory and Statutory bodies. More specifically, he has been a Chairman of the standing Disciplinary Committee of the Council for the Registration of Forensic Practitioners UK and a Panel member of the London Area Funding Review Committee of the Legal Services Commission (LSC), followed by an appointment as an Independent Adjudicator, by the LSC.

In his role as a Consultant Barrister at Carlsons, Lawrence advises and represents the practice's domestic and international clients with a particular focus on strategy, arbitration, commercial litigation, commodities and professional liability.

Recognised for his performance, Lawrence acts for clients across a broad range of commercial disputes including contract claims, shareholder disputes, directors’ duties, partnership disputes, guarantees and civil fraud. Lawrence also represents clients in arbitrations under various institutional rules including GAFTA, LCIA and SIAC, as well as ad hoc proceedings. Lawrence accepts appointments to sit as an arbitrator or co-arbitrator and was very pleased to be asked to sit as an arbitrator in the LSE-LCIA London Vis Pre-Moot in March 2020.

Lawrence's recent notable cases include:

  • Rosneft v EU (sanctions)

  • Erdenet v The Government of Kazakhstan (breach of contract, acknowledgement of

    debt and the jurisdictional gateway under CPR 6.37), value of the claim:

    approximately US$20m

  • A claim by Trustees in Bankruptcy against a Company, in respect of the

    remuneration due to a foreign bankrupt agent of the Company to the value of

    US$14m

  • A GAFTA Arbitration valued at approximately US$10m

  • A claim between two Russian shareholders valued at US$24m

  • An arbitration between a consortium of International Investors and an International

    conglomerate valued at US$1.3bn

  • A cross petition between two Russian shareholders of an English company valued at about US$40m

Lawrence’s interests involve current affairs and spending as much time as he can with his family.
